On The Market—Contemporary Extravagance in Northbrook

The Property: Set behind a 15-foot-tall privacy hedge, this house in western Northbrook has 18 rooms, a pool and a tennis court, and an outdoor kitchen big enough to cater a swim meet or a tennis match. The contemporary-styled home has a monumental entry flanked by two hefty pillars that support a jaunty triangular top. Inside, the party-sized foyer showcases a fluidly curved hanging staircase with glass banisters. There is a dining room that seats 24, a two-story living room with tall windows looking onto the pool and a waterfall, and a master bedroom suite that is like a private retreat. The suite has a double-sided fireplace, glass doors out to the hot tub, stairs down to a private section of the basement, and stairs up to an extension of the master closets.
There is also a recently redesigned kitchen and six-plus baths, one of which is accessible directly from the pool area. In all, the house has 12,600 square feet of living space. About one-third of that is in the basement, which has a big pub room and a movie theatre complete with a snack bar and a ticket booth. The lot is 1.19 acres, and there is an empty lot next door available for sale at a separate (but as yet unannounced) price.
The sellers, Bryan and Julie Barrish—he’s an investor in nursing homes and other businesses—built the house in 1994. With their kids grown, they have bought a house on the Gold Coast and plan to move there, Julie Barrish says. If a buyer prefers, the Barrishes will remove the big Green Bay Packers logo embossed into the floor of the four-car garage.
Price Points: According to Midwest Real Estate Data, only one Northbrook home has sold for $3 million or more since 2005. (It sold for $3 million even.) But during that time, a baker’s dozen were sold for between $2 million and $2.5 million.

This is a most hideous and tasteless structure.
dennis: they are not 'pillars,' they are 'engaged columns.' And the 'jaunty triangular top' is half of a 'pediment.'
It looks like an entrance to some sort of Home Expo store.
Yeah, it's a partial pediment, but I thought more people would be able to visualize a 'jaunty triangular top' if they don't have an architectural vocabulary. Ditto the pillars. But thanks for keeping me on my toes.
