Enough with pinstripes, navy, and gray— real men wear plaid

When asked what men will be wearing this fall, the first trend that Michael Macko—a former vice president of men's fashion for Chicago's Saks Fifth Avenue, who recently left to become the fashion director for Details magazine—brings up is plaid. "It was all over the runways, New York to Paris," he says, reporting on the season's preview shows. "Everything from in-your-face Yohji Yamamoto shawl/kilt combos to mixed tone-on-tone looks from Etro. D&G sent out an army of guys wearing bright tartan dinner jackets. All this is going to translate to the streets of Chicago, and not only for men. If you're careful and keep to the same color wheel, try mixing smaller patterns like a glen plaid with a tattersall—that's an elegant yet current approach that I love." So whether it's Paul Bunyan–bold or Savile Row–subtle, this fall think plaid about you, baby!
